Information reaching BVI News is that Eighth District Representative Marlon Penn has been elected chairman of the now ‘reunified’ National Democratic Party (NDP).
Penn secured the position during the party’s special convention held on Saturday evening, April 18, reportedly defeating other contenders including Mark Vanterpool and Ronnie Skelton by a comfortable margin.
Meanwhile, Second District Representative Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull is said to have been elected deputy chairman. The outcome places at the helm of the party a long-standing NDP member who remained with the organisation following the 2019 split, alongside Turnbull, who previously aligned with both the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) and years later, the Alliance.
Penn’s election positions him to lead the NDP into the next general election. Should the party secure a majority at the polls, he would be in line to become Premier. Penn had been serving as chairman before the full reunification party.
