Samuel Durand, who was remanded into custody at the Dominica State Prison following the March 19 protest, on Victoria Street in Roseau was granted bail in the sum of $5000 on his own recognizance.
He appeared before a Roseau High Court on Wednesday.
The resident of Bath Estate forms part of the first group of men who were arrested and charged for unlawful assembly.
This charge falls under the Public Order Act and carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.
A previous report on Dominica News Online (DNO) stated that the protest, which was initially peaceful, escalated into chaos when law enforcement used teargas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters after a barricade was brought down. The event, which was live-streamed on several social media outlets, deteriorated into scenes of confusion as police attempted to disperse the crowd, leading to clashes that resulted in injuries and raised questions about the appropriateness of the tactics employed by the law enforcement officers.
All three bills—the Electoral Commission Bill 2024, the House of Assembly Elections Bill 2024, and the Registration of Electors Bill 2024—were ultimately passed in Parliament on March 19.
