By Aaron Humes: It may not be news to residents of San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, but it’s getting more expensive to live on the island these days, according to the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).
Comparing Belize’s major municipalities, ‘La Isla Bonita’ saw 3.1 percent higher prices on average year-over-year for the month of July, hitting food, non-alcoholic beverages, restaurant and café services, household furniture, various household cleaning and maintenance products, domestic services, medicinal products, doctor office visits, personal care products, and home rental costs.
The West continues to be hard-hit, with increases reported for Belmopan (2.8 percent), San Ignacio/Santa Elena (2.3 percent) and Benque Viejo (1.6 percent).

Corozal Town reported the fourth highest rate of inflation at 2.3 percent, but Orange Walk recorded only a 0.5 percent increase. Belize City recorded a negligible 0.1 percent increase.
Independence Village, on the other hand, recorded the lowest inflation rate with prices decreasing by a marginal 0.9 percent on average. Persons living in this village saw lower prices for sugar, fruitbearing vegetables such as habanero peppers, vegetable oils, readymade foods and other food products, as well as for garments for both males and females, bedroom furniture, beers, rums, cellular phones, and personal care products. It continues to outstrip Dangriga (up 1 percent) and Punta Gorda (up 2.7 percent) among municipalities in the South.
