It may be a coincidence or deliberate timing, but the BVI’s two major political parties — the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) and the National Democratic Party (NDP) — both have major events set for April 18.
The ruling VIP will be hosting a high profile anniversary gala while the NDP will host its convention, where delegates will select key leadership positions, including chairman, deputy chairman and other party officers.
Speaking on the Honestly Speaking radio show this week, Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer confirmed that the VIP will stage the celebratory gala at Scrub Island as part of its 55th anniversary activities.
According to the minister, the free event will include recognition of longstanding contributors to the party and the territory. “We have about 13 persons that we’ll be honouring. It’s going to be quite an exciting night,” he said, adding that transportation will be arranged. “We’ll have a ferry to get you over there… come out, enjoy yourself and celebrate.”
Rymer also used the opportunity to highlight the VIP’s record in office.
“The VIP has been good to these Virgin Islands. We have done quite a lot of development here in the territory… for families [and] businesses,” he said, urging the public to attend.
With both parties activating their bases on the same day, April 18 is shaping up to be more than just a scheduling coincidence — it’s an early show of strength ahead of an increasingly anticipated general election in the Virgin Islands.
