TRAVEL: by Eric Mackenzie Lamb
Although only 26 minutes in flight time from my home island of Nevis, arriving in St. Maarten is like coming to another planet. While Nevis is so quiet at night you can hear the crickets chirping, here you can hear music from parties right through the night. Cars, trucks, and motorcycles are in constant motion. And you see dozens of people exploring the island in ATVs.
And the choice of restaurants is almost endless, from classic French creole cuisine, Indian establishments like Bombay Bites to Italian or Greek dishes. And much more.
Getting to the island is made easy for travelers from all over the world, thanks to Princess Juliana International Airport, which was recently renovated after damage from a hurricane.
The island is also a destination for some of the world’s largest cruise ships, as well as luxurious private yachts and sailing vessels of all sizes. To tour around the island, which is roughly the same circular shape as Nevis, takes less than three hours.
Along the way, you can explore the hills where fruit and vegetables have been grown for centuries. As well as the Salt Pond on the Dutch side, where the salt was an important sales item and contributed substantial wealth to St Martin.
