Pope Francis was laid to rest today after a solemn funeral Mass held in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City.
Thousands of mourners gathered in the early morning light, filling the square and surrounding streets. Many had traveled from around the world to say farewell to a pope who championed the poor and worked to modernize the Church. The ceremony reflected Francis’s personal style—simple, heartfelt, and welcoming.
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, led the Mass, assisted by hundreds of cardinals, bishops, and priests. Prayers were offered in several languages, highlighting Francis’s focus on a global, inclusive Church.
His wooden casket, plain and unadorned by tradition, was placed before the altar as bells tolled across Rome.
World leaders came in large numbers to pay their respects. U.S. President Donald Trump and former President Joe Biden both attended, as did French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Prince William represented King Charles III. Representatives from more than 110 countries, including many kings, queens, and heads of government, were present, making it one of the largest diplomatic gatherings at the Vatican in decades.
Francis had always emphasized the importance of the marginalized, and this spirit was visible today. Among the crowd were migrants, refugees, and homeless individuals invited by the Vatican to attend. Several of them participated in the readings and prayers, a powerful reminder of the pope’s lifelong commitment to those on the edges of society.
After the funeral Mass, Francis’s body was taken to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, fulfilling his personal wish to be buried there rather than in the Vatican crypt. He had prayed many times before the famous icon of the Virgin Mary in that church, especially before his trips abroad. His burial there breaks with recent papal tradition but fits his request for a modest and accessible final resting place.
Questions about the pope’s personal affairs have also surfaced. As a Catholic priest and later pope, Francis lived under a vow of celibacy and had no wife or children. However, he does leave behind a number of relatives in Argentina, including nieces and nephews who have remained largely out of the public eye throughout his pontificate.
Pope Francis did prepare a simple will before his death, covering mainly his burial wishes and the distribution of a few personal effects. It is not the kind of detailed financial will many public figures leave, as the pope’s possessions are few and mostly symbolic. His spiritual and pastoral legacy, rather than any material wealth, is what he has left to the world.
The funeral marked the beginning of a nine-day mourning period for the Catholic Church. Soon afterward, the cardinals will gather for a conclave to elect a new pope. As they prepare for that decision, the world reflects on the extraordinary life and ministry of the first pope from the Americas, and one of the most influential religious leaders of modern times.
