The West Indies Breakout League is a new T20 cricket tournament starting April 25, 2025, in Trinidad and Tobago.
It will last until May 10 and take place entirely at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. The goal is to give young and lesser-known Caribbean players a chance to shine.
Six regional teams will compete in 17 matches using a round-robin format followed by playoffs. The league is a joint project between Cricket West Indies and the Caribbean Premier League.
Players must be under 30 and have little professional experience. Each team has seven protected players chosen ahead of time. The rest were picked in a draft. Every team had to include at least one leg-spinner.
the West Indies Breakout League 2025 is expected to be streamed live on the Windies Cricket YouTube channel, the official platform of Cricket West Indies. This aligns with their approach for other domestic tournaments, such as the West Indies Championship.
Teams include:
- Barbados Pelicans: Features young talent like Leniko Boucher and Nyeem Young. Expect aggressive batting and strong fielding.
- Guyana Rainforest Rangers: Known for solid spin bowling, with 17-year-old Riyad Latif being one to watch.
- Jamaica Titans: Focused on building batting partnerships. Players like Kirk McKenzie aim to anchor innings.
- Leeward Islands Thunder: Aims to use power hitting and pace bowling. Keacy Carty and Jewel Andrew are key.
- Trinidad & Tobago Legions: Home team with fan support. Balanced side with good all-rounders like Jyd Goolie.
- Windward Islands Infernos: Strong top order and young talent. Alick Athanaze and Teddy Bishop will try to lead early.
Opening day has two matches: Guyana vs Windward at 2:00 PM and Trinidad vs Barbados at 7:00 PM.
This league could help the West Indies find future stars and rebuild its cricket reputation.
