By Nefretery Nancy Marin: I’ve never felt like I had the right to speak on the UDP situation—mainly because I’ve never been a member. But as a concerned Belizean who’s been paying close attention, I can no longer stay silent.

What unfolded in the UDP over the past few years wasn’t just political drama—it was a necessary purge. One faction clearly saw the deep rot: corruption, old habits, and individuals who would never change their ways. So at great risk—and knowing the fight would be long and costly—they expelled, and they expelled again. Some say the fall of the UDP was ego, but I believe it was unavoidable.
When the foundation of a building is weak and the walls are cracked, you don’t patch it up. You knock it down and rebuild—stronger. That’s what was happening. Painful, yes. But essential.
Meanwhile, other factions are clinging to the “old UDP”—the very faces and structures Belizeans overwhelmingly rejected at the polls. Instead of joining the fight for reform, they’ve worked hard to criminalize and destroy the character of those pushing for something new.
As a Belizean, I say this clearly: we need a New UDP, and we need it fast. Because what we’re living under now is not just a government—it’s a growing dictatorship under the PUP. And without a strong, credible opposition, Belize won’t survive another term like this.
Some will say, “Where are the third parties?” But let’s be honest: we call for them when we feel guilty, but come election day, Belizeans vote PUDP. Until we truly break that cycle or reform from within, we’ll keep getting the same results.
This is bigger than party politics. It’s about our democracy. It’s about Belize.
