The Ministry of Education has dedicated the entire month of October as Reading Month, championing the potent theme, “Unlock Your Possibilities: Read, Imagine, Grow.”
This crucial initiative aims to shift the perception of reading from a simple school task to a powerful tool for self-improvement and realizing one’s full potential.
During an interview on Observer AM yesterday, Education Officer for School Library Services and the National Focal Point of the Early Learners Support Unit, Karen Browne-Francis said the timing is deliberate – that is it is held after the students have settled in during September.
She said October provides a concerted opportunity to start the academic year right, making them aware of the end goal, which is to become “awesome readers” who can contribute to national development.
This focus addresses both students who are reading below grade level and those who can read but don’t, she added, by encouraging them to fully engage in the process of developing vocabulary and comprehension.
The campaign seeks to cultivate a year-round culture of reading, not just a month-long activity, by emphasizing that just 15 minutes of reading each day is the “magic number” that can significantly increase a person’s word count and knowledge base over a year.
Browne-Francis stressed that reading is far more than decoding words; it’s about comprehension, which builds essential critical and creative thinking skills.
“The theme itself, “Unlock Your Possibilities”, is designed to be an action-oriented command, showing children that by reading, they are taking the steps to imagine a new world, grow their capabilities, and envision their future contribution to society, thereby transforming the lighthouse into a beacon of community resilience,” she said.
