Santo Domingo.- Following the tragic roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, which killed 231 people and injured over 180, the Dominican government admitted there is a legal vacuum regarding the oversight of privately built infrastructure. President Luis Abinader stated that current laws do not mandate inspections for private construction projects, highlighting the need for new legislation to prevent similar tragedies.
During his weekly press conference, Abinader called for justice and accountability but noted that the judiciary operates independently. His legal advisor, Antoliano Peralta, emphasized that no one can predict the outcome of ongoing investigations and legal proceedings.
The collapse occurred during a party headlined by merengue legend Rubby Pérez, who was among the victims. Also killed were former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel, Montecristi governor Nelsy Cruz, and fashion designer Martín Polanco. Most victims died instantly, while others succumbed to their injuries at local hospitals. The disaster has sparked national mourning and urgent calls for regulatory reform.
