Scientists have discovered the world’s biggest snake in Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest.
This new species is called the Northern Green Anaconda (Eunectes akayima). It can grow up to 7.5 meters (24.6 feet) long and weigh as much as 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds). No other known snake is as large.
The huge snake was found in the Baihuaeri Waorani Territory, a remote part of the jungle. The discovery was made by scientists working with the local Waorani people, who believe these snakes are sacred. The Waorani led the team on a 10-day journey through thick rainforest to find the animal.
Tests showed that this snake is not the same as the Southern Green Anaconda (Eunectes murinus). There is a 5.5% genetic difference, which means they split apart around 10 million years ago. That makes this snake an entirely separate species with its own history.
A National Geographic film crew was there at the right moment, filming a show called Pole to Pole with actor Will Smith. They caught the giant snake on video, giving the world its first look at this massive creature in the wild.
However, scientists are worried about the snake’s future. Its home is under threat from tree cutting, oil drilling, and climate change. Experts are calling for urgent action to protect both the anaconda and the rainforest.
This find breaks records and shows how important indigenous knowledge is in helping science. It’s also a reminder that we must protect Earth’s wildlife before it disappears.
