A snorkeling trip off George Town ended in tragedy on 8 Aug., when a 71-year-old visitor from the United States was found unresponsive in the water.
Shortly after midday, emergency crews were called to North Church Street, just south of the Eastern Avenue junction, after a male swimmer’s companions on shore realised they could no longer see him.
Police said he had set out to snorkel along the shoreline when he disappeared from view. Sometime later, he was spotted unresponsive nearby. The man was brought to shore, where emergency responders provided assistance.
He was transported to Cayman Islands Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities have not yet released his name.
