Freeport, Bahamas – May 20, 2025
The Grand Lucayan Resort in the Bahamas will be completely rebuilt as part of a huge $827 million project. The plan is to turn the 36-acre property into a large cruise port and tourist destination. The Bahamian government supports the idea, and it could change the economy of Grand Bahama Island in a big way.
Private investors and cruise companies are leading the redevelopment. They plan to build a modern cruise pier and terminal that can handle several large ships at once. The area will include shops, restaurants, places for local crafts, and a space for cultural shows.
Parts of the old resort will stay and be improved. New luxury beach hotels, water parks, and eco-tourism activities are planned. These upgrades will serve both cruise passengers and people staying longer on the island.
At a press event, Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper said this was a major investment for the island. He said it would create thousands of construction jobs and many permanent ones. “This is more than a cruise port. It’s a symbol of renewal for an island long in need of revitalization,” he said.
The Bahamas wants to grow its economy beyond just Nassau and Paradise Island. Since cruise ships already bring in most of the country’s visitors, the government is upgrading ports on many islands.
Some local people are worried about harm to the environment and how small businesses will be affected. But developers say they will build in a sustainable way and give local vendors a chance to take part.
Construction is set to begin at the end of 2025. The first cruise ship docks could be ready by 2027. If everything goes well, Grand Bahama might become one of the top cruise destinations in the Caribbean.
