Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has restated her goal to strengthen ties between Barbados and Cuba. She thanked Cuba for its help in many areas over the years, especially during the COVID-19 crisis.
Speaking at Ilaro Court during a meeting with Cuba’s Vice Minister for Culture, Lizette Martínez Luzardo, Ms. Mottley highlighted Cuba’s investment in education and the arts. She said that Fidel Castro’s focus on developing people gave Cuba its strength and resilience.
She reminded that Cuba’s most memorable support came when it sent 100 nurses and 10 doctors to Barbados during the pandemic. She said their work likely saved lives and families from much greater suffering.
Vice Minister Martínez Luzardo expressed gratitude and said that Cuba was glad to be part of CARIFESTA XV in Barbados. She noted that the event would also mark the start of a year of celebrations for Fidel Castro’s centenary.
The two leaders also discussed possible cooperation in areas such as film studies in schools and the pharmaceutical sector.
