By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 52-year-old Belize City mother narrowly avoided jail time after picking up her fourth conviction for possession of a crack pipe.
Kervisha Harris, of #11 Simon Lamb Street, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Ludlow Black in Court #5 on Monday, where she was charged with possession of utensils used for smoking controlled drugs.
Police say that on June 4, 2025, Harris was found on New Road with a glass pipe adapted for smoking cannabis. She pleaded guilty to the charge, but claimed in court that the pipe wasn’t hers.
“That pipe was not for me,” Harris told the Magistrate. “The man saw police coming and asked me to hold it for him. I was getting a mango at the time.”
Prosecutors confirmed that Harris has three prior convictions for similar offenses, the most recent landing her in prison in November 2024 after she failed to pay a $1,000 fine. Despite this history, Magistrate Black opted not to impose a custodial sentence.
He fined Harris $300 plus a $5 court cost, citing her early guilty plea and the need for her to address what appears to be a persistent pattern of behavior. She was given until the end of July 2025 to pay or face three months in prison.
Magistrate Black also asked Harris if she was seeking help for her apparent drug problem. Harris maintained her innocence, repeating that the pipe wasn’t hers.
With this latest conviction, Harris now has four offenses related to crack pipe possession, underscoring ongoing challenges with drug use in the city.
