The Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has deployed a team to assist Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS), the sole distributor of electricity in Jamaica, in their power restoration efforts following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
The team departed on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 Hurricane with wind speeds of over 180 mph, made landfall in Jamaica around midday on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, causing significant damage to homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure, including Jamaica’s power transmission and distribution systems. The central and western parishes, in particular, were severely impacted by the storm.
“Our BEL team is being led by Tyrone Reynolds, Line Supervisor, working alongside Power Line Technicians Kareem Lopez, Perr Tillett, Ethan Alvarado, Bladimir Alvarez, Adolfo Oliva, and Kendale August. They join power line crews from other member countries of the Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC) to assist in restoring service lines in Jamaica,” BEL said.
“We stand in solidarity with our Jamaican brothers and sisters by joining our thoughts and prayers with our actions,” said our CEO John Mencias.
