By Horace Palacio: The Institute of Archaeology (NICH) has confirmed that all archaeological reserves in Belize are open to the public as of 6:00 a.m. today. Only the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave and Barton Creek Cave were closed yesterday due to heavy rainfall caused by a passing cold front.
The brief closures were a safety measure in response to rising water levels and slippery conditions within the caves. The sudden change in weather earlier this week led to the temporary suspension of some tours, affecting both visitors and operators.

In a public advisory, the Institute stated, “All Archaeological Reserves, including all cave sites, are OPEN for visitations. Tour Operators and Tour Guides are advised to exercise caution and remain alert at all times.”
NICH continues to monitor weather patterns and site conditions closely and will issue further updates if necessary.
Today’s reopening is good news for the tourism sector, especially during a period of high visitor activity. Travelers are once again free to explore Belize’s remarkable cultural and natural heritage across the country’s many protected archaeological sites.
For real-time updates, the public is encouraged to follow the Institute of Archaeology’s official Facebook page and communication channels.
