By Aaron Humes: The Belize Tax Service has issued a rather humiliating public notice to 34 businesses and individual taxpayers seeking an urgent response on arrears owed to the State.
Between them is owed a total of $16,542,198.48 in a combination of business tax, general sales tax (GST), income tax and PAYE (pay-as-you-earn). This also includes penalties and interest.
The defaulters are urged to contact the BTS to settle their affairs or they will face legal action to recover the amounts owed.
A majority of the businesses are located in Belize City with a handful in the Stann Creek District and one each in Orange Walk and Toledo.
The Service is authorized to issue periodic notice of defaulters under the Tax Administration and Procedure Act.
