By Zoila Palma: To strengthen Belize’s chronic disease prevention and control system, 5 healthcare professionals from Belize traveled to Taiwan to participate in a seed trainer program.
The healthcare professionals participated in the program from March 3 to 28, 2025 at the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital (FEMH).

This was part of the Project for Strengthening Metabolic Chronic Disease Prevention and Control Systems in Belize — a collaborative initiative between the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF), the FEMH, and Belize’s Ministry of Health and Wellness.
Under the leadership of FEMH Deputy Superintendent Dr. Yu-Sen Peng, a teaching team was assembled, comprised of experts from the departments of endocrinology and metabolism, cardiology, nephrology, nutrition, rehabilitation, family medicine, plastic surgery, and psychiatry, as well as the Community Development Center. This multidisciplinary team designed a comprehensive and intensive tailored curriculum on topics such as diabetes and hypertension.
The trainees gained a deep understanding of the content while taking the initiative to create educational handouts and training materials, including consultation aids, with some revised up to six times to better meet the cultural and community needs of Belize.
In addition to classroom learning, the FEMH organized a series of cross-departmental site visits, from hospitals to community health centers, allowing trainees to gain insights from Taiwan’s frontline experience in chronic disease prevention and care.
“This exchange between Taiwan and Belize represents more than just a transfer of knowledge—it’s part a mutual journey of growth.
A heartfelt thank you to FEMH . Because of you, these future seed trainers are now empowered to bring meaningful changes to chronic disease care in Belize,” Taiwan ICDF expressed.
