By Aaron Humes: This Easter Monday is heavier than most for the Roman Catholic population of Belize.
While Christ is risen, his servant in Rome and leader of the Church Pope Francis has passed on at 88.
The local Church has announced plans for a Memorial Mass a week hence at the church seat, Holy Redeemer Cathedral, starting at 6 p.m.
The Diocese of Belize City-Belmopan through Administrator Reverend Father Jordan Gongora officially announced the passing to parishioners and extended condolences, not only to Catholics but others touched by the former Argentine cardinal’s “humble and joyful witness to the Gospel.”
“In this year of hope and during the Easter season, we are strengthened by the promise of the resurrection…As a shepherd close to the poor and a voice for peace, justice and care for creation, Pope Frnacis reminded us that “we belong to God,”” Father Gongora wrote.
The Diocese asks the faithful to pray for the repose of the Pope’s soul and eternal rest and perpetual light by God in heaven.
Funeral arrangements are to be announced in due course, followed by the closely-watched selection of his successor as Bishop of Rome.
