High school and primary school students in Cayman Brac turned out at the Aston Rutty Centre on Friday to explore the types of jobs and careers that may lie ahead of them.
The annual careers fair, held by the Layman E. Scott Sr. High School, brought the students together with employers from across the public and private sectors and gave them a glimpse into jobs that varied from firefighter to pilot to accountant to lawyer.
Yvette Gayle, the school’s pastoral deputy principal, told the Compass the fair has been held annually for more than a decade, and involves companies and government departments showcasing a wide variety of careers.
“It is a way of collaborating and connecting as we try to help our young people identify where they want to go,” she said.
“We have made sure that there is a discipline or a field for all students, be it in the practical areas, for example, public works, auto mechanics. … We have the hospitality industries, we have Tech Cayman with robotics, then we have the Mosquito Research and Control Unit, medicine in terms of the hospital, Water Authority, and even scholarships and opportunities.”
Law firms Mourant and Conyers attended, as well as financial services company KPMG, she said.
