By Aaron Humes: While Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) says there has been talk, a lot of it, but no action on a potential buyout of Speednet Communications and local cable companies, eyes are on how the family of Prime Minister John Briceño, shareholders in both Speednet and Centaur Communications, stands to benefit.
Telemedia, though officially privately owned, is held at least in part by the Government as mandated under Title 13 of the Constitution. On Wednesday, businessman Michael Ashcroft added fuel to the fire with comments on Channel 5 News’ morning program – his Waterloo Investments has majority shares in Speednet.

Officially, the Prime Minister told reporters this evening, he knows nothing: “I don’t know, you’ll have to talk to the people at BTL and the people at Smart.”
Pressed further on the potential conflict of interest between Telemedia and Speednet, he reiterated, “I wish it would be my family that owns Smart, but those things are discussed at the management level and then it goes to the board. I can assure you that if something were to happen, it has to be in the interest of BTL and the interest of the Belizean people.”
