The excitement of the 2025 Calypso season moved a notch higher this week as calypsonians participating in the quarterfinals officially selected the positions in which they will perform. The “dipping ceremony” was held at the Calypso House, where 32 contenders drew envelopes to determine their order of appearance on January 17.
Organizers described the moment as both thrilling and nerve-wracking, noting that many performers consider certain numbers “frightening” due to the pressure of opening or closing the show. The ceremony was attended by some of the artists and media representatives, eager to witness the lineup reveal.
Among the performers, Daddy Chess will take the stage at number 27 with Leaking Roof, while Haxey appears early at number 3 with Wretched of the Earth. Liberator secured spot 15 with We Can Come Together, and Mika will close in the later rounds at number 28 with We Little but We Large. Other notable entries include Singing Sandy at number 7 with Sue and Ellie, Caressa at number 9 with Daybah in de Yard, Shadow Flow at 31 with Time Alone Will Tell, and Observer at 16 with a song entitled Gatekeeper.
The full roster features a diverse mix of veterans and rising voices, including Mighty Omi (1), Rebs (2), Jamma B (6), Bob (5), Lady S (11), Tasha P (12), Bingo (13), Mighty D (14), The Observer (16), De Webb (17), Danyan (18), Sye (19), Shanice (21), Mystery (22), Checker (23), Trendsetter (24), Cheko (25), Royette (26), Jaydee (29), Jerd (30), and Abiyah who is set to close the show at number 32.
The quarterfinals will be staged at The Factory on Valley Road, beginning at 8:30 p.m. Thirty-two calypsonians will battle for 20 coveted spots in the semifinals.
Tickets are already on sale, with early bird passes available online for $30. Regular tickets are priced at $50, reserved seating at $60, and VIP packages at $100. VIP patrons will enjoy elevated views, big-screen access, complimentary drinks, and finger foods. Organizers emphasized that this year’s pricing is designed to make the show accessible while still offering premium experiences for those seeking the full carnival atmosphere.
The dipping ceremony also served as a prelude to Dominica’s Carnival opening, scheduled for this Saturday. The Calypso Association will host a truck parade featuring decorated sponsor banners, live performances from the Swinging Stars Band, and calypsonians showcasing both new material and classic road songs.
Organizers expressed gratitude to sponsors and the Ministry of Tourism for their support, noting that without them, the calypso season would not be possible.
With the lineup now set, anticipation is building for what promises to be an exciting quarterfinal round. As one organizer declared: “The season is here. Quarterfinals are here. Let’s begin.”
