Recruiting Caymanian barbers is challenging, says Kerrianne Smith of Executive Barbers Studio.
And she should know, having set up the barber business at Cayman Falls plaza on West Bay Road 12 years ago with her husband Kenardo Smith.
“There might be a lack of exposure or understanding of the potential opportunities in this field,” she says.
The husband-and-wife team are keen to see more Caymanians enter the profession, and they encourage young people to consider the option.
REWARDING CAREER
“Becoming a barber offers flexibility, financial independence, and the ability to build a loyal client-base,” says Kerrianne.

“It’s a creative and rewarding career that allows you to interact with people daily, build connections, and be your own boss, in many cases.”
Kerrianne points out that demand for barbering is high on-island, with a mix of locals and tourists seeking quality grooming services.
“Barbering is an essential service, and as Cayman continues togrow, so does the need for skilled professionals,” she says.
PASSION FOR PROFESSION
Kenardo, who trained in Jamaica, has been a professional barber for 27 years.

He has always had a passion for grooming and helping people look and feel their best, and loves offering his services at Executive Barbers Studio.
“I enjoy the creativity and precision that barbering requires,” he says. “It’s rewarding to see a satisfied client leave the chair, feeling confident and refreshed. I also enjoy the relationships I’ve built with clients over the years – they’re like family.

“It’s not just about cutting hair – it’s about making people feel good about themselves, and that’s truly priceless.”
Barbering is also a career that evolves with trends and technology, allowing barbers to grow along with the times.
MORE EDUCATION

Both Kenardo and Kerrianne are keen to hear from young Caymanians interested in becoming barbers and are happy to help guide them on the best way to enter and excel in the profession.
They believe that more education about barbering would be advantageous, including workshops, career days, and mentorship programmes, along with vocational training and sponsorships.
“Barbering is more than a trade; it’s an art form and a community service,” says Kerrianne. “It provides a platform to connect with people from all walks of life.
“With the growing focus on personal grooming and wellness, barbering offers an excellent opportunity for entrepreneurial Caymanians to create a lasting impact in their communities while building a fulfilling career.”
