Cricket West Indies (CWI) has formally asked the International Cricket Council (ICC) to change the rules for cricket qualification at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
They are concerned that the current system might prevent Caribbean nations from taking part.
The issue arises because the West Indies cricket team is made up of players from 15 different Caribbean countries and territories. These nations compete together in international cricket but have separate Olympic teams. Since the Olympics only allow sovereign nations to participate, the unified West Indies team cannot compete as it does in other tournaments.
CWI has suggested two possible solutions:
- If the West Indies men’s or women’s teams qualify based on ICC rankings, then a regional tournament among the Caribbean nations would decide which country represents the region.
- Alternatively, a global qualifying tournament could be held, including Caribbean nations and other ICC associate members.
CWI President Dr. Kishore Shallow emphasized the importance of fairness and inclusion, stating that Caribbean athletes have historically excelled at the Olympics. He believes that cricket’s return to the Games should not exclude young Caribbean cricketers from this opportunity.
The ICC has not yet announced the qualification process for the 2028 Olympics. However, CWI is urging them to consider the unique structure of West Indies cricket and ensure that Caribbean nations have a fair chance to participate.
