The Caribbean community is mourning the loss of one of its public servants, Hayden Blades of Barbados. Blades, described as “dedicated” by CARICOM , made significant contributions to several key regional institutions throughout his distinguished career.
Blades’ career spanned over two decades at the CARICOM Secretariat, where he held various roles, including Director for Trade, Agriculture, Export Promotion, and Air and Sea Transportation. According to the CARICOM statement, during this time, he was instrumental in coordinating the implementation of the CARICOM Export Development Project, which eventually evolved into the Caribbean Export Development Agency.
Later in his career, he returned to CARICOM as the Advisor, Single Market and Economy and served as the Officer-in-Charge of the CARICOM Haiti Office. His dedication to fostering regional trade and economic development left a lasting impact on the Caribbean landscape, stated the organization.
Beyond the CARICOM Secretariat, Blades also served as the Executive Director of the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) from 1994 to 2000. At CARDI, it is reported that he spearheaded a restructuring program aimed at creating a more efficient and sustainable institution. This involved reorienting the Institute’s Research and Development program to be market-led and results-oriented, leading to the formation of several commodity networks and the strengthening of support units.
The CARICOM Secretariat expressed their sadness at his passing, stating, “We acknowledge his many years of dedicated service to Regional Integration and development efforts, and extend condolences to his former colleagues and family members.”
CARDI also offered their condolences, highlighting his impactful tenure: “The management and staff extend heartfelt condolences to Mr. Blades’ family and friends. May he rest in eternal peace.”
