This year’s National Heroes Day, on Monday, 26 Jan., will focus on honouring Caymanians who have helped shaped the physical development and growth of the Cayman Islands.
The ceremony to mark the achievements of these individuals will begin at 8:30am at Heroes Square in George Town.
This year’s theme is ‘Honouring a Nation Built: The Power of Physical Infrastructure’, and it will recognise the people and organisations whose work in developing the islands’ physical infrastructure, including roads, ports, airports, utilities and public buildings, has had a lasting, transformative impact on the nation’s growth, economic activity, social development and quality of life.
Governor Jane Owen, Premier André Ebanks, Members of Cabinet, parliamentarians, other senior government officials and uniformed groups will be in attendance at the event.
Heroes Day is a public holiday in the Cayman Islands.
A government press released noted that members of the public who are invited to attend the ceremony are asked to be seated no later than 8:15am, in advance of the parade which will precede the award ceremony.
“Given the formality of the occasion, they are also encouraged to wear appropriate formal attire, including closed footwear and clothing that covers the shoulders. Attendees are reminded not to cross the square or parade area during the ceremony,” the release stated.
Later in the day, starting at 4pm, a celebratory event for the awardees, families and the general public will be hosted by the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture and Heritage on Cardinall Avenue. It will feature a programme that will include local cultural groups and live performances, a kids ‘corner, fireworks, a drone show and a variety of local cuisine for purchase.
Awards presented to Caymanians as part of the National Heroes Day ceremony was officially changed to national recognition awards last year. The name change aims to distinguish award recipients from those individuals bestowed with the title of national hero, the release noted.
