Bishop John Cline
Bishop John Cline has confirmed that he is seeking consideration as an At-Large candidate under the National Democratic Party (NDP), signalling a potential entry into frontline politics after years of public advocacy.
Speaking on JTV News, Cline confirmed that his name is currently in a pool of prospective candidates to be assessed by the party’s territorial committee, which is tasked with selecting individuals to contest the upcoming general election.
“There are some names in that pool,” Cline stated, adding, “Mine included.”
He explained that the process does not involve a general vote by party members but instead relies on a smaller committee to determine which candidates are best positioned to represent the party and win public support.
“That committee will meet and decide who the five persons are that they want to send forward,” he said.
Cline noted that more than five individuals are currently being considered, but fewer than 10, indicating a competitive selection process.
The clergyman said this is the first time he has agreed to run for elected office under the NDP banner, despite prior encouragement.
Cline, who said he never joined a political party before becoming an NDP member in 2024, attributed his decision to concerns about the territory’s direction and a desire to contribute at a higher level. “I see where the country is. And my heart bleeds sometimes for my beloved BVI,” Cline stated.
“I believe sometimes when you’re in the room where decisions are being made, it’s the best place to be if you want to effect change,” he argued.
Cline has previously served on several public boards across both major political parties, including the BVI Health Services Authority, the Trade Commission, and the Recovery and Development Agency. He said his involvement across administrations reflects a focus on national service rather than partisan alignment.
“I have worked on boards for both ruling parties… because for me, I want to serve my country,” he stated.
If selected, Cline said he intends to bring a people-centred approach to governance. “I will take that same shepherd’s heart and bring it to the wider BVI population,” he said.
However, he acknowledged that his candidacy is not guaranteed, as the final decision rests with the party’s internal selection process. “Whether I come out in the mix is yet to be seen,” Cline stated.
