— The Curriculum Development Unit (CDU) recently hosted a professional development session for kindergarten teachers centered on the theme “Plants and Animals,” part of the New Enhanced Curriculum currently being piloted across the Federation.
The session provided an opportunity for educators to reflect on their classroom experiences, assess instructional strategies, and identify areas for improvement as the new curriculum continues to roll out.
Mrs. Amanda Serrant-Edmeade, Director of the Curriculum Development Unit, explained that the meeting formed part of the Unit’s ongoing evaluation process aimed at strengthening early implementation efforts.
“We began the pilot in October 2025. The curriculum is very new and very different, and we are having challenges throughout the region. At the end of January, we met as a team to discuss the feedback that had been observed so far and to look at the areas of improvement in instruction using the curriculum,” she stated.
Teachers from several schools participated in collaborative discussions designed to deepen their understanding of the thematic approach and to explore practical strategies for effective classroom delivery. Emphasis was placed on making cross-curricular connections—integrating science concepts with literacy, numeracy, and creative expression—to promote holistic learning.
Participants also examined techniques for observation, questioning, and assessment to ensure that young learners not only acquire foundational knowledge but also develop curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
The CDU reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing teacher support through continuous professional development initiatives. By providing educators with updated curriculum guidance and practical instructional tools, the Unit aims to ensure that kindergarten students build a strong foundation for understanding the world around them.
