Twenty-six students from eight primary schools across Dominica, along with two high school students from Florida, will find it easier to pursue secondary education and college studies this year, thanks to support from Dominica America Scholarship & Culture Inc.
A press release from DASCI shared that during a virtual awards ceremony held on June 21, 2025, DASCI announced the recipients of scholarships for the 2025-2026 academic year.
A total of twenty-eight students were awarded scholarships valued at either US$750 (approximately EC$2,000) or US$1,000, aiming to assist them in furthering their education.
DASCI, a nonprofit organization incorporated under 501(c)(3), states that it is primarily composed of Dominicans residing in Florida. Each year, the organization invites applications from students attending selected primary schools in Dominica and high schools within St. Lucie County, Florida.
This year marks DASCI’s 22nd anniversary. The organization reported that due to ongoing membership fundraising efforts and generous donations, it was able to distribute these scholarships. The recipients from Dominica come from various primary schools, including San Sauveur (2 students), Newtown (1), Petite Savanne (1), Soufriere (1), Atkinson (3), Castle Bruce (5), Salybia (1), Sineku (9), and Warner (3).
School principals play a vital role in facilitating the application process. Rickey Ellick of Sineku Primary School expressed appreciation for DASCI’s efforts, stating, “I commend DASCI for the wonderful work to assist Dominican children. May your input into their lives be extremely significant and contribute to the realization of their dreams.”
Parents also contribute significantly to the development of youth. Mrs. Catherine Charles, whose son from Newtown Primary School received a scholarship, shared her thoughts: “This scholarship will significantly ease the financial burdens of stationery, uniforms, bus fare, and other miscellaneous expenses associated with secondary education. This allows me to focus on other responsibilities as a parent.”
According to DASCI, Since 2007, the group has been awarding scholarships to primary school graduates transitioning to secondary school in Dominica. To date, the organization has granted 162 scholarships, totaling US$106,950 (EC$288,765). The organization says it remains committed to investing in young people’s education and looks forward to continuing its impactful work.
