By Aaron Humes: The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is currently aiding the Belize Police Department in an investigation related to the suspected involvement of two officers in the landing of a drug plane last Friday.
The operation began when the Joint Intelligence and Operations Centre (JIOC) detected an illicit aircraft entering Belizean airspace. Security forces were swiftly deployed, leading to the discovery of burnt aircraft remnants on the outskirts of Graham Creek, Toledo District. However, its suspected cargo remains unaccounted for.

Local police launched an extensive search in the area, resulting in the detention of two officers from the Anti-Narcotics and Special Patrol Units, who were believed to have facilitated the aircraft’s landing. Despite being held for 48 hours, these officers were released after no incriminating evidence was discovered linking them to the operation.
Commissioner of Police Chester Williams revealed that a team of senior investigators has been assembled to delve deeper into the officers’ potential involvement. “So far, we have not been able to unearth anything to indicate that those officers were involved in a plane landing,” Williams stated. He emphasized the department’s commitment to transparency, noting that the officers agreed to have their devices searched by DEA agents.
When asked about the credibility of the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) in handling the investigation, Williams reassured reporters that the investigation is being led by a team of senior investigators with oversight from DEA officials.
The inquiry has also seen the detention of other individuals linked to the incident. Reports indicate that the Chairman of Graham Creek Village is under suspicion based on evidence found on his phone, which allegedly suggests involvement in the plane landing.
This incident marks the second suspected drug plane landing in southern Belize this year, following a similar occurrence on March 2, when burnt aircraft remains were discovered near the border with Guatemala.
