If the rain is pouring when you look outside your window on Election Day, is that likely to stop you heading down to the polling station to cast your ballot?
There is ample evidence that shows that the weather affects almost every aspect of our lives, including our moods, what we eat, our spending habits, and even the clothes we wear, but does the weather have an impact on voter turnout on Election Day?
Studies show that the weather doesn’t have an impact on voter turnout, nor does it impact election results, so it appears to be one of the few things that is remarkably free from the influence of the weather.
On Wednesday, 30 April, electors in the Cayman Islands head down to their registered polling stations to cast their ballots and, while many will head to their polling station by car, some will travel by foot, and still others on bicycles, scooters and motorbikes.
So, what will the weather be like on Election Day?
With polls opening at 7am and closing at 6pm, is there a better time of day to go along to cast your ballot if you want to avoid getting too hot or getting wet in the rain?
Director general of the Cayman Islands National Weather Service, John Tibbetts, said the forecast on Wednesday shows “there may be a few isolated morning showers, decreasing by mid morning, along with moderate northeasterly winds”.
That means the weather is going to be good; or at least mostly sunny.
The forecast currently shows that the coolest time to vote will be right after the polling stations open at 7am when the temperature will be around 78 degrees. By 9am, the temperature will rise to around 82 degrees, and by 11am it will reach 84 degrees.
The breeze will also increase during the day, and while the wind direction is forecast to remain steady out of the northeast, the wind will be blowing at around 14mph at 7am and will gradually increase over the course of the day to 18mph by 2pm.
So, this year, it appears that the weather will be good, mostly dry and sunny and not too hot, but whatever the weather, the polling stations will be open.
