In a surprising turn of events, Dr. Griffin Benjamin, a Dominican psychiatrist, has been placed on administrative leave as head of Clarevue Psychiatric Hospital by Antigua’s Minister of Health, Molwyn Joseph, less than a year after his appointment.
Reports suggest that tensions have been escalating between Dr. Benjamin and the Minister, stemming from disagreements on various health-related issues.
This decision to put him on leave with pay reportedly follows his alleged refusal to provide the Minister with a report regarding the admission of a medical student, along with a comprehensive medical report linked to the case.
The matter centers around a student from the American University of Antigua (AUA), who was confined at Clarevue Hospital from August 15 to 27. Following the student’s confinement, their family lodged a formal complaint alleging mistreatment, prompting the Ministry of Health to initiate an investigation.
Dr. Benjamin, who hails from Wesley, was brought on board by the Antiguan government due to his extensive experience as a Consultant Psychiatrist in Dominica.
He has also worked in Antigua previously and operates a private psychiatric practice in St. John’s. Additionally, he provides mental health services to students at the Ross University School of Medicine in Barbados.
As of now, officials have not specified the duration of Dr. Benjamin’s administrative leave or provided further comments regarding the ongoing investigation.
