Duartiano Institute urges upholding Dominican sovereignty and law

Santo Domingo.- The Duartiano Institute has called for the upcoming “Dialogue on the Haitian Crisis and its Implications for the Dominican Republic” — involving President Luis Abinader and former presidents Leonel Fernández, Hipólito Mejía, and Danilo Medina — to uphold the Dominican Constitution and legal framework, especially regarding identity documentation for foreigners.

Dr. Wilson Gómez Ramírez, president of the Institute, emphasized that only the authorities of a person’s country of origin should issue identity documents, warning that any deviation from this would violate national sovereignty and international norms. He reminded the public of the constitutional principle of non-intervention and called for a national pact that prioritizes Dominican interests.

Gómez Ramírez also urged the business sector to comply with labor laws when hiring foreign workers, particularly in agriculture, construction, and tourism. He advocated for better wages and working conditions to encourage Dominican participation in the workforce, alongside greater mechanization of production.

On border issues, he highlighted persistent corruption and the need for firm legal action to control the illegal movement of people, goods, and drugs. He underscored the constitutional significance of the border region and called for its full enforcement.

The Institute views the meeting as a critical moment to take clear, decisive action in defense of Dominican sovereignty and identity.
