By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition, Tracy Taegar Panton, has voiced serious concerns following a recent double murder on Cedar Street. The incident, believed to be linked to threats made by a known gang affiliate on social media, has intensified fears within communities already grappling with insecurity.
In a social media statement, Panton described the brazen act as “a tragic and chilling reminder” of the pervasive lawlessness that is placing families in jeopardy across the nation. “No family should have to live in fear, and no community should have to endure the trauma of targeted violence or the lack of safety in their own homes,” she stated.

The Opposition is urging the Government to reinstate and adequately fund community policing strategies, aiming to restore public confidence in law enforcement and engage civil society in building a culture of peace. Panton stressed that the current wave of violence is not an isolated occurrence but rather a result of deep-rooted issues such as poverty, unemployment, and hopelessness.
In addition to community policing, Panton advocated for comprehensive economic and social reforms, including job creation, education reform, and enhanced investment in mental health and family support services to tackle the root causes of gang violence.
Moreover, the Leader of the Opposition expressed alarm over reports indicating the infiltration of drug cartels in northern Belize, asserting the need for stricter border security measures to prevent high-powered firearms from reaching city streets.
“The cartels are both well-resourced and well-equipped in carrying out drug-related activities,” she noted, emphasizing the urgency of a strong national response to safeguard citizens.
Panton concluded her statements by reaffirming the Opposition’s readiness to support any genuine, inclusive, and transparent initiatives aimed at protecting the Belizean people and enhancing national security. “Our country simply cannot afford to risk more innocent lives. As Belizeans, we deserve to feel safe,” she asserted.
