The family of Edward O. LeBlanc has announced the release of Fragments of the Dawn and Other Poems, a collection of poetry published posthumously. Recognized as one of Dominica’s most influential poet-statesmen, LeBlanc’s lyrical work “invites readers into the private, lyrical world of a man whose life and work helped shape Dominica and the Caribbean in the 20th century.”
According to a family press release, spanning a period of nearly thirty years, from 1947 to 1974, the compilation showcases LeBlanc’s evolving contemplations on themes such as love, loss, ambition, philosophical musings, and the island’s stunning natural environment. They add that his poetry, predominantly composed in a Romantic English style characteristic of mid-century Caribbean writers, provides comfort and inspiration, resonating with universal human experiences through emotional depth and grace.
Among the collection’s notable pieces are “Fragments of the Dawn” and “Vade Mecum,” which garnered early recognition in Important American Poets and Songwriters (Valiant Press, 1948). These works helped establish LeBlanc’s reputation as a talented young poet before his political career took prominence.
Edward Oliver LeBlanc (1923–2004) served as Dominica’s Chief Minister from 1961 to 1967 and subsequently as the nation’s first Premier from 1967 to 1974. The statement describes LeBlanc as being known for his humility, integrity, and unwavering dedication to the people of Dominica, adding that his political leadership was closely linked to his poetic voice. His verses—kept private during his lifetime—reflect the rhythms and sensitivities of the island’s farmers, fishermen, and laborers, embodying insights that informed his governance.
His family emphasizes the enduring influence of his words: “His words continue to inspire, carrying a legacy of
dignity, service, and enduring love for Dominica,” his family notes. “We wanted to share these poems so
others could feel the same connection, beauty, and emotional truth that we did.” The book is dedicated to
Edward O. LeBlanc and his wife Ethel, whose strength and grace continues to serve as the foundation of our family.”
The collection features thirty poems, including two written in Kwéyòl accompanied by side-by-side English translations. This bilingual inclusion celebrates both LeBlanc’s cultural roots and Dominica’s linguistic heritage. Early critics have offered high praise for the work:
– “An admirable collection… attests to the poetic genius, personal integrity, and deep and abiding humanity of the author.” — Alick Lazare, author
– “A wonderful collection that reveals why this extraordinary man is highly revered as the Father of Our Nation.” — Dr. Irving André, jurist and biographer
– “…a valuable literary artifact… whose roots have brought forth spreading expressions of today’s Dominica.” — John Robert Lee, St. Lucian poet
Highlights of the collection include “To the Ambitious Youth,” a timeless piece offering guidance on perseverance and character, and “Vade Mecum,” an elegy dedicated to LeBlanc’s mother.
The publication process benefited from the contributions of local Dominican experts, underscoring the community’s role in bringing this project to completion. Giselle Laurent oversaw pre-press production, while Aaron Hamilton created the cover art—an original seascape depicting the bay at O’parc, a place intimately connected to LeBlanc’s retirement. Gregory “WochLa” Rabess lent his linguistic expertise to ensure accurate Kwéyòl spelling in two poems, reflecting the cultural significance of language.
“Their dedication and artistry reflect the strength of Dominican talent woven into every stage of this book,” concluded the release.
