The Independence Calypso competition is making its return to Antigua and Barbuda’s cultural calendar, Festivals Minister Daryl Matthew announced on Wednesday.
Matthew told Observer media that the revival of the competition would be to encourage positivity and patriotism by Antiguans and Barbudans.
“It’s a time where persons in particular feel good in the country,” Matthew said. “Continue to put music out there that lets us be proud to be Antiguan and Barbudan, so it’s a great time to turn down the partisanship and focus on patriotism and that is what we are expecting,” he said.
During Wednesday’s prize giving for the recently concluded Carnival festivities, the minister said that the Calypso committee would be in charge of organising the competition and encouraged calypsonians to participate in the competition.
The last Independence Calypso Monarch, held virtually in 2020, was won by Leston ‘King Young Destroyer’ Jacobs with ‘All Hands on Deck’. Peetron Thomas was first runner-up with ‘Paradise’ and second runner-up was Glenroy ‘Epic Byke’ Joseph, with his rendition of ‘National Pride.’
