Final over heroics from medium pacer, Shamar Springer, helped to propel the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons to an exciting eight-runs victory over the Trinbago Kight Riders (TKR) at North Sound on Wednesday night and move them to the top of the standings with five points in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
Given final over responsibility in front of an energetic crowd at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Springer bowled smart and measured to veteran Kieron Pollard, restricting TKR to just five runs as the visitors chased the 14 needed off the final over to overhaul Falcon’s 167 for six.
Springer gave up a single to Nathan Edwards off his first delivery but went on to bowl four consecutive dot balls to Pollard, prompting loud roars of celebration from the Falcons supporters. Pollard struck a four off the final delivery but it meant little in the grand scheme of things as Falcons claimed their second win of the tournament after four matches.
Springer ended with figures of none for 20 in two overs while Player of the Match Obed McCoy, had fantastic figures of four for 39 in four overs.
Pollard made 43 not out off 28 deliveries with three fours and four sixes, taking 22 off the penultimate over bowled by McCoy. Colin Munro top-scored for TKR with 44 while Keacy Carty made 35 from 31. Edwards was not out on 10.
Earlier, after being asked to bat by TKR, Falcons got off to a slow start, losing their first three wickets for just 55 runs after 8.4 overs.
Late fireworks from Fabian Allen who smashed three fours and three sixes on his way to 45 off 20 and 39 not out from Imad Wasim, helped to push the home team to a respectable 167 for six. Jewel Andrew contributed at the top of the order with 22 off 35 deliveries.
Usman Tariq (2/37) and Edwards (2/56), were the pick of the bowlers for the Knight Riders.
Antigua and Barbuda Falcons host Guyana Amazon Warriors on Friday at the North Sound venue starting at 7:00 pm. They will then host St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on Sunday at the same venue starting at 11:00 am.
