Police are investigating a fire at Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s actual home in north London. The blaze at the PM’s property happened in the early hours of Monday 12 May.
The £2m town-house has been rented out ever since he was elected to the top position in the government back in July last year and as a consequence, moved into Number Ten Downing Street with his wife Victoria and children. It is unknown who has taken up temporary residence.
The entrance to the Kentish Town dwelling was damaged in the flames, but two fire engines quickly had the situation under control and it is understood that nobody was hurt.
Police set up a cordon which at one point stretched the whole length of the street, although that was shortened later in the day.
A statement from the Metropolitan Police said: “Officers attended the scene and it is subject to a live investigation so we cannot comment further.” The spokesman also declined to provide any further details when asked whether any members of Sir Keir’s family were in the house when the fire started.
Sir Keir thanked the emergency services for their work at the house outside of which he and his wife were filmed clapping for the NHS during lockdown, when Covid struck back in 2020.
One resident, 36-year-old Dan Nicholson, said there had been a 4×4 catch fire on the opposite side of the road just last week. “I called the police and shortly afterwards the fire brigade turned up. It was pretty dramatic and it feels like it might be related to the incident this morning; it seems too much of a coincidence.”
