A firefighter is being treated at Princess Alexandra Hospital after he sustained injuries during a scheduled training demonstration at Clayton J Lloyd International Airport.
The Anguilla Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident on Facebook shortly after 2pm on Thursday, 18 September, but offered no details on how it occurred.
Communications minister José Vanterpool later released a statement which said the male firefighter was injured in an “unfortunate accident” at the fire service’s airport facility that morning.
“As is standard practice for all demonstrations, the appropriate emergency response equipment and personnel were on site,” he said.
“The injured officer was immediately attended to by his colleagues, who swiftly administered emergency care, and he is currently receiving further medical treatment.”
The minister said his team await further updates on the firefighter’s condition.
“While this incident is regrettable, it also highlights the professionalism, readiness and quick response of the Anguilla Fire and Rescue Services team,” Vanterpool continued.
“Their actions demonstrated the very skills and preparedness that this training seeks to instil and reinforce.”
He commended the officers for their “rapid and effective response” on behalf of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, Utilities, Housing, Information Technology and E-Government Services.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with our colleague and his family at this time. Further information will be provided as it becomes available,” he concluded.
