The first-ever Entrepreneurship Song Competition, aimed at inspiring youth awareness and understanding of entrepreneurship has been launched in Dominica. The initiative was officially unveiled on April 24, 2025, at Dominica State College (DSC) by Mrs. Marilyn A. Cuffy-Morris, founder of MAANZ Limited and renowned author and producer.
The launch event took place in Room BC4 of DSC, where Mrs. Cuffy-Morris introduced the competition and presented a specially produced entrepreneurship-themed song titled “Bridging Gaps in Entrepreneurship.” The song, crafted with a catchy Bouyon beat—the popular Dominica musical genre—was performed by student singer Japhia Austrie and produced in collaboration with local musicians.
The competition invites DSC students to learn the song’s lyrics and present it creatively, in genres spanning bouyon, cadence, jazz, calypso, poetry, skit, and more. Participants will be judged on their mastery of the words, originality, and ability to captivate audiences. Prizes for the top three entries, along with consolation awards, will be awarded when students showcase their performances during the reopening of the new school year on September 16, 2025.
Mrs. Cuffy-Morris stated that this initiative aims to foster a deeper understanding of entrepreneurship among young people, encouraging them to appreciate the process of starting, running, and growing a business. She expressed hope that such creative engagement would inspire other youth to follow suit, contributing to the island’s economic development.
The launch also featured the presentation to the DSC, of a three-part business training guide series titled “Don’t Doubt Yourself, Just Stay Focused,” which covers the phases of entrepreneurship: preparation, execution, and expansion. These guides are available for purchase and are designed to complement existing college programs.
The event was attended by college officials, including Service Learning Coordinator Ms. Alwinar Thomas, Marketing & Communications Officer Ms. Kimberly Benjamin, and Student Activities Coordinator Mr. Kijuan Thomas, along with enthusiastic students eager to participate.
Mrs. Cuffy-Morris expressed her gratitude to DSC Officer in Charge, Ms. Trudy Christian, for supporting the initiative and looks forward to the competition’s culmination in September. She highlighted her ongoing commitment to fostering youth creativity and entrepreneurship as vital drivers of Dominica’s future growth.
The “Bridging Gaps in Entrepreneurship” song was initially launched on Vibes Radio in November 2024 and continues to serve as a motivational tool to educate and inspire young entrepreneurs across Dominica.
