By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Fisheries Department has announced the official closure of the Florida Stone Crab (Menippe mercenaria) fishing season, effective from July 1 to September 30, 2025, in accordance with the Fisheries Resources Act and Statutory Instrument No. 108 of 2022.
During this period, no person or establishment is permitted to fish for, sell, buy, or possess Florida Stone Crab. The Department emphasized that any violation of the closed season regulations will result in prosecution under the Fisheries Resources Act No. 7 of 2020.
The seasonal closure is part of ongoing efforts to protect and sustain Belize’s marine resources, ensuring the long-term viability of the stone crab population. The species, known for its prized claws, plays a vital role in the country’s coastal fisheries economy.
The Fisheries Department is calling on the public and all licensed fishers to respect the closure and to report any suspected illegal activity. Reports can be made by calling 224-4552 or by emailing [email protected].
The Department also reminds stakeholders that the stone crab season will reopen on October 1, 2025, and encourages responsible harvesting practices when the fishery resumes.
Additionally, the Queen Conch (Strombus gigas) season was closed earlier on May 25, 2025, after the national production quota for the 2024–2025 season was met. The conch fishery will remain closed until October 1, 2025, and any person or establishment found in possession of conch meat during this period will face legal action, as well.
