The government of Guyana is helping young people get ready for a digital future by investing in digital learning. This effort is led by the Ministry of Education.
President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali spoke about this during the launch of the Digital Learning TV Box at the Leonora Track and Field Facility on Saturday.
The new Digital Learning TV Box lets families watch digital education programs from the Guyana Learning Channel (GLC). It connects older TVs that can’t receive the latest broadcast signals with the new ATSC 3.0 digital system, which gives better picture and sound quality.
President Ali praised the Ministry of Education for improving digital learning and creating better ways for students to learn. He said these tools will make learning more exciting and available to more people.
This is part of a larger digital plan that connects education, finance, and government services. For example, new Digital Schools will soon open in Regions Two, Three, and Six. These schools will provide high-quality, interactive lessons for students across Guyana and even the Caribbean. The digital schools will work along with physical schools to help students in remote areas get the same learning materials.
President Ali said this will also solve problems like teachers being absent or students not having the right resources. He reminded parents that in five years or less, children will live in a world where artificial intelligence (AI) and technology are very important.
He said the Digital TV Box and Digital Schools will help students learn in the kind of world they will grow up in.
The government also plans to install self-service kiosks where people can do things like renew their driver’s licenses. These kiosks will be placed in public places like malls and police stations. People will scan their license, use a credit or debit card, and complete the process quickly without dealing with paperwork or delays.
Guyanese will also soon be able to make payments with their mobile phones using a national digital payment system. This system is being made with help from the Indian Government.
President Ali said these digital tools are not just for today, but will help the country during future emergencies, like new pandemics.
Education Minister Priya Manickchand and GLC Director Anieshaw Mohamed also spoke at the event.
To make sure every family can watch the new educational programs, the GLC is giving out 2,350 Digital TV Boxes at the Leonora Track and Field Facility.
