The Government of Grenada has successfully concluded its participation in the 4th Cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, presenting its national outcome report and reaffirming its unwavering commitment to human rights, democratic governance, and sustainable development.
Led by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Export Development, Grenada’s delegation engaged constructively with Member States and UN bodies, outlining progress made in implementing previous recommendations and treaty obligations, while emphasising its continued efforts to strengthen institutional frameworks and protect vulnerable populations. The report highlighted key reforms in justice, education, gender equality, and climate resilience.
During this cycle, Grenada received 171 recommendations and, following inclusive national consultations facilitated through the National Mechanism for Implementation, Reporting and Follow-up (NMIRF), formally accepted 103. These accepted recommendations now form the foundation of Grenada’s reform agenda and reflect broad national ownership and legitimacy.
As part of its outcome report, Grenada identified several priority areas for implementation:
- Correctional reform and rehabilitation
- Human rights and climate resilience
- Protection of vulnerable groups
- Advancing gender equality and social protection, children’s rights and health access
- Establishment of a national human rights institution
Grenada expressed sincere appreciation to the Commonwealth Secretariat, as well as multilateral and bilateral partners, for their continued technical and financial support in advancing these national priorities.
“The outcome report reflects our national resolve to uphold the dignity of every citizen and to translate international commitments into tangible progress,” said Permanent Secretary Roxie McLeish-Hutchinson. “We look forward to deepening partnerships that support inclusive development and human rights for all.”
Grenada’s presentation was well received by the international community, with several Member States commending the country’s transparency, engagement, and commitment to multilateralism.
The Government of Grenada remains dedicated to implementing the accepted recommendations and will continue to work closely with civil society, regional institutions, and international partners to ensure a rights-based future for all Grenadians.
