A contingent of Guyanese soldiers are currently in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) to help with the post-Beryl rebuilding efforts in the Southern Grenadines.
The first group of officers arrived in SVG on Monday, March 24, 2025, while the others are scheduled to arrive today (March 25), bringing the full contingent to 40.
The men, and one woman, are part of the Guyana Defence Force, Guyana 4 Engineer Battalion, and the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) of Guyana, and are here in fulfilment of a promise made to Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves by Guyana’s President Mohamed Irfaan Ali during the 48th Regular Meeting of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government in Barbados, held from February 19-21.
Welcoming the contingent to SVG on Monday, Minister of Housing, Orando Brewster said the government is grateful for the support, and the team will concentrate on residential reconstruction.
“Thus far, we have done good work with the repairs, and I’m hoping that this team of 40 would help to accelerate the work, because we have to accelerate as we move into another hurricane season,” Brewster said at the VIP Lounge of the Argyle International Airport (AIA).
He noted that people who are still in accommodation provided by the government should soon be back in homes where they are comfortable.
“So, I’m looking forward to working with this team. I’ll be very much on the ground in the Grenadines with them. We have thus far prepared all of their accommodations,” Brewster said.
