Guyana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs disagrees with a statement made on April 16, 2025, by China’s Charge d’Affaires.
The Chinese official said that Guyana and Venezuela could resolve their border issue through friendly talks, but Guyana says this is not the case as the matter is already sub judice.
The Ministry reminded China that the border issue is already being dealt with by the International Court of Justice (ICJ). This decision came from the UN Secretary-General under the 1966 Geneva Agreement, which both Guyana and Venezuela accepted.
Guyana also pointed to the Argyle Declaration from December 14, 2023. That declaration confirms Guyana’s commitment to using the ICJ to settle the border dispute. Because of this, Guyana will not take part in any discussions that could interfere with the Court’s work.
The Ministry also noticed that China has said nothing about Venezuela’s plan to hold elections on May 25, 2025. Venezuela wants to hold these elections in “Guayana Esequiba State”—a name it uses for Guyana’s Essequibo region. Guyana calls this a serious violation of its sovereignty and borders.
Guyana says it will continue to follow international law and act respectfully in its dealings with other countries.
