Guyana’s Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, has asked Indigenous villages, especially near the borders with Venezuela and Brazil, to stay alert and help protect the country.
Speaking at the National Toshaos Council Conference, Brigadier Khan said that the army depends on Indigenous communities for their knowledge and presence. He said, “Without you, we are partially blind and deaf.” Over 200 village leaders attended the event at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.
He encouraged young people from these areas to join the army and police, saying their help is not just welcome but necessary. “We all have a duty to keep Guyana safe,” he said. “We can’t do it without you.”
The Brigadier also asked communities to share information and stay in touch with security forces. He said people have been recording videos of activity across the border, which helps the army know how to respond.
As Guyana prepares to celebrate its 59th Independence Day, he asked everyone to unite and proudly display the national flag, the Golden Arrowhead. He reminded everyone that Guyana’s borders were officially settled by the 1899 Arbitral Award.
“Sovereignty is something we all share and must protect,” he said. “Show love for Guyana by flying the flag.”
Brigadier Khan also responded to comments about the army being small. “People say we don’t have a big army,” he said. “But I care more about heart than numbers. If we all love our country, we will succeed—together.”
