President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali officially opened the new World Trade Center Georgetown (WTCG) on June 21, 2025.
This modern 7-story building, located in Kingston, Georgetown, has around 37,500 square feet of office space. It is the first and only World Trade Center in the CARICOM region, giving Guyana a stronger global presence in trade.
President Ali said the opening sends a clear message: “we’re ready to play in the big league.” He added that Guyana is aiming for the highest global standards while remaining humble. He sees the WTCG as a step toward a new, more competitive economic culture.
The centre is part of Guyana’s larger goal to become a key hub for trade and investment in the Caribbean. It is expected to help not just Guyana, but the wider CARICOM region. Ali mentioned a partnership with Bloomberg Greens to boost the country’s agro-processing industry so its products meet U.S. and international standards.
One key project tied to this goal is a new agro-processing and food hub at Yarrowkabra, on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway. The hub will help small farmers connect to export markets and meet global standards from day one. It will also link Guyana’s local output with markets in Brazil, CARICOM, and beyond.
President Ali believes the WTCG will help small and medium-sized businesses in Guyana compete on the world stage. The centre will give them access to capital, networks, and global partnerships. “Let it be a Centre of creating, facilitating, and empowering,” he said.
Guyana is also working on digital reforms to improve its financial system and make it more transparent. At the same time, the aviation sector will get a major update over the next two years, aiming to become the most modern in the region.
President Ali praised the private sector for leading the WTCG project. He especially thanked Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), which got the license to build the centre in May 2022. DDL Chairman Komal Samaroo said the centre has already begun supporting Guyana’s creative industries. He noted that Guyana’s copyright laws need updating, based on a recent study.
The WTCG is expected to help businesses of all sizes, including small and micro-enterprises. It will officially open on October 21, just before the World Trade Centers Association Members Forum in New York on October 28.
The Georgetown WTC is connected to over 300 centres in 102 countries. Its goal is to identify and support new business opportunities between Guyana and the rest of the world.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by many top officials and diplomats, including Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh, Minister of Tourism Oneidge Walrond, and others.
