The West Indies head coach, Daren Sammy, was fined 15% of his match fee for criticizing an official during the recently concluded opening Test match against Australia at Kensington Oval in Barbados.
Sammy breached Level 1 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct on June 27 during the second day of the match that Australia won by 159 runs.
Sammy’s criticism relates to comments he made during a media interaction at the end of day two, during which he criticized one of the match officials about multiple incidents throughout the day’s play.
Sammy violated Article 2.7 of the Code, which pertains to “public criticism of, or inappropriate comment about an incident occurring in an international match or any player, player support personnel, match official or team participating in any international match.”
In addition to the fine, Sammy received one demerit point on his disciplinary record for his first offence in 24 months.
Sammy accepted the sanction proposed by Javagal Srinath of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees after the charge was brought by on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Nitin Menon, third umpire Adrian Holdstock, and fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite.
Level 1 offences like this can result in an official reprimand, a fine of up to 50% of the match fee, and one or two demerit points.
