A single-story wooden home was destroyed in an early morning fire on Friday, but the sole occupant escaped without injury.
The blaze broke out shortly after 6:00 a.m. on Hawkins Drive in the Cassada Gardens area, prompting an immediate response from the St John’s Fire Station. Fire crews arrived to find the 11 x 12-foot wooden structure fully engulfed in flames.
“On arrival at the scene, the fire crew met the wooden structure fully engulfed in fire with its roof already caved in,” said Inspector Lester Bagot of the St John’s Fire Station. “Water was used from the fire tenders to extinguish the fire.”
Despite the efforts of firefighters using Fire Tenders No. 19 and No. 17, the structure and all its contents were destroyed by the flames.
The occupant told investigators he was awakened by smoke and flames and managed to run outside to safety.
The destroyed home was not connected to electricity and was reportedly not insured, according to fire officials.
According to police, the fire also caused damage to the right mirror and indicator light of a nearby vehicle.
Both police and fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
